The Governor has announced that the following barriers to state unemployment benefits have been removed for workers of businesses impacted by COVID-19:
The one-week waiting period to apply for unemployment benefits will be eliminated
The requirement that while receiving unemployment benefits individuals must actively look for a potential new job will be removed. The understanding behind this provision is that many employers would most likely want to rehire their employees in the future.
Employees who lose their jobs, as well as employees that have reduced hours, due to COVID-19 can apply for benefits
The requirement that individuals must have in-person interviews prior to qualifying for benefits will be removed. This initial intake can now be done remotely, either by phone or online.
Employers will not be required to help pay for their former workers’ unemployment benefits
You can apply for benefits online 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you need help, contact the Customer Call Center at 888-737-0259, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You must create an online account to file an application for Unemployment Insurance online. If you are interested in working with The Town of Chapel Hill to help provide meals for the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, please respond to us directly and we will connect you with the appropriate person. The IFC is in need of meals and the town is willing to pay you for your contribution.
There is one existing arrangement, between a local business which is providing 500 meals in exchange for $1,000 paid by the town, but we want to be mindful that the number of meals you may be able to provide could be a different number than the number that is set with that.
We hope this connection is one that can help offset some of the financial losses that we know you may be taking right now.

This community group listserv is at present mainly focused on helping the community of service industry folks in the Chapel Hill/ Carrboro area, but does not have to be limited to that. It is not meant to be political, phobic or argumentative.
We will do our best to respond and have requests for support put out to the group. As of now this is a 100% grassroots organization put together by regular folks in the service industry.
